ATAL funded FDP on earthquake engineering concludes

The CE Dept organised an online five-day FDP on “Recent Trends in Earthquake Engineering” during 6 – 10 December with funding from AICTE. The inaugural ceremony was held on 6 December 2021 with a great inaugural speech by Dr E J James, Professor Emeritus and Director, Pro-Vice Chancellor (R & C), Karunya University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The ianugural ceremony was presided over by Dr Saji C B, Principal. Dr Justine C Jose (Prof and Head, CE Dept) welcomed the participants and dignitaries and Dr Abhilasha P S (Asso Prof, CE Dept) proposed a vote of thanks. Dr Sudha Balagopalan, Dean-Academics and Dr V N Krishnachandran, Vice-Principal offered felicitations. The FDP shall conclude on 10 December 2021.

Some highlights of the FDP

Day 1

  • Dr Katta Venkatramana, Professor, Civil Engineering, NIT Karnataka handled the first session on the topic “Engineering Seismology and Learning from past Earthquakes” from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm. Dr. K. B. Maheswaran Nambudiripad, Professor (retired), NIT Calicut, Kerala handled the second session on the topic “Vibration of continuous systems” from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm. He discussed about all the vibratory systems and techniques on vibration isolation. Participants had a very vibrant discussion after the session. The third session was also handled by Dr. K. B. Maheswaran Nambudiripad on the topic ‘Practical Vibration problems’ from 2.45 to 4.45 pm. He explained the participants the details about vibratory systems and many references on this topic.

Day 2

  • On the second day of FDP, Dr. Ajay Chourasia, Sr. Principal Scientist, Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee handled the first session on the topic “Earthquake Safety in India’” from 9 am to 11 am. He explained about the vulnerability of the building stock in India and tools to sensitize citizens about the issues concerning preparedness measures for an earthquake. Dr Kavitha P E, Associate Professor, CE Dept, Federal Institute of Science and Technology, Angamali, Kerala handled the second session on the topic “Significance of Soil Structure Interaction Analysis”. Dr T P Somasundaran, Professor, NIT Calicut delivered the third session on the topic “Dynamic Response of Structures for Seismic Forces” from 2 to 4.15 pm. Basic principles of structural dynamics are presented with emphasis on applications to the earthquake resistant design of building structures.

Day 3

  • On the third day, Dr Rohan Bhasker, Senior Project Officer, National Centre for Safety of Heritage Structures, IIT Madras handled the first session on the topic “Recent Advances in Seismic Fragility and Vulnerability Modelling” from 9 am to 10.45 am. Dr Deepa Balakrishnan, Professor, CE Dept., School of Engineering, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala handled the second session on the topic “Earthquake Resistant Construction Techniques” from 11.15am to 12.45 pm. She was successful in delivering all the major earthquake resistant techniques to participants. Dr Sajith A S, Associate Professor, NIT Calicut handled the third session on the topic “Salient Features of Recent Earthquake Codes and Design of Special Structures” from 2.00 to 3.30 pm. He explained the participants the design of water tanks, chimneys and retaining wall in a beautiful manner and also had a detailed discussion on the Salient features of earthquake codes for design and ductile detailing.

Day 4

  • On the fourth day, Dr Bharati Raj J, Assistant Professor, CE Department, NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad handled the first session on the topic “Applications of Smart Concretes in Seismic Damage Detection” from 9.00 am to 11 am. She explained how Self Sensing Concrete can be applied for Seismic Damage Detection. Dr Robin Davis, Assistant Professor, CE Department, NIT Calicut, Kerala handled the second session on the topic “Performance Based Earthquake Analysis and Design”. He was successful in delivering the Performance Based Seismic Design (PBSD) of Structures. Dr Smitha K K, Associate Professor, CE Department, TocH Institute of Science and Technology, delivered the third session on the topic ‘”inite Element Analysis of Buildings Subjected to Earthquake Loading” from 2.00 to 4.15pm. The basic principles of Finite Element Analysis of buildings subjected to seismic loading were explained. The speaker discussed about the Analysis of buildings using SAP software.

Day 5

  • On the fifth day, Dr Syed Jalaludeen Shah, Head, CE Department, MES College of Engineering, Kuttippuram handled the first session on the topic “Earthquake Resistant Design of Foundations” from 9.00 am to 10.45 am. Dr C Justine Jose, Head of CE Dept, handled the second session on the topic “Reasons, effects and precautions of earthquake” from 11.15am to 12.30 Pm. Participants had a very vibrant discussion after the session.

Valedictory function

The Valedictory Function of the programme began with a silent prayer. Ms  Nisha Varghese, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, welcomed everyone. Vice Principal Dr V N Krishnachandran delivered the keynote address. Report of the FDP was presented by Dr C Justine Jose, Head of CE Dept, and Coordinator, ATAL FDP. Felicitations were offered by Mr Suresh Lal, Executive Director – VICT, Mr. P N Unnirajan, Administrative Director – VICT and Dr Sudha Balagopalan, Dean Academics. The feedback of the FDP session was given by the participants of the program.  Dr Abhilasha P S, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering and Co-coordinator Dayof the FDP, delivered the vote of thanks.
