CE faculty participation in online training– Introduction to RS & GIS using QGIS

Continuous professional development through specialized training programs is essential for faculty members to remain updated with the latest technological advancements and teaching methodologies. In alignment with this objective, faculty members of the Civil Engineering Department-Ms. Nirmala Krishnan (Asst Prof – Sr Grade,CE Dept) , Ms. Ponsy Paul (Asst Prof – Sr Grade,CE Dept),Ms. Chithira Ajeeth (Asst Prof,CE Dept),  Ms. Chithra M (Asst Prof,CE Dept) and  Mr Kiran Babu A R (Asst Prof,CE Dept)—attended an online training program on “Introduction to RS & GIS using QGIS” organized by the National Water Academy, CWC, Pune, from 03 – 14 November 2025.

The training included online lectures, demonstrations, and review webinars covering the fundamentals of Remote Sensing (RS), GIS concepts, map projections, raster and vector data handling, georeferencing techniques, and basics of spatial analysis. Access to recorded sessions allowed flexible, self-paced learning.

The knowledge gained will directly benefit curriculum delivery and foster innovative research contributions in water resources and environmental engineering domains.

Learning Outcomes

  • Improved theoretical understanding of GIS and RS principles.

  • Enhanced skills in spatial data handling, mapping, and analysis using QGIS.

  • Strengthened analytical abilities through real-world hydrology and environmental case studies.

Key Lessons

  • Effective integration of GIS & RS into teaching and research practices.

  • Case-based learning improves conceptual clarity and application skills.

  • Geospatial datasets enable data-driven decision-making approaches.

Implementation Plan

  • Introduce GIS/RS demonstrations and case studies in regular coursework.

  • Encourage student projects using open-source datasets (IMD, NRSC, NASA, etc.).

  • Promote research initiatives focusing on geospatial analytics for water resource planning.

The Editorial Team of News & Events joins the entire Vidya fraternity in extending hearty congratulations to Ms. Nirmala, Ms. Ponsy, Ms. Chithra,Ms Chithira and  Mr Kiran on this noteworthy accomplishment that broadens their ’ knowledge of geospatial technologies and improved their capability to utilize GIS and RS tools in teaching and research projects !!!
