EEE students intern at KSEB Substation, Madakkathara
Four students of S8 B Tech (EEE-B) batch – Silpa P Kumar, Sreeragi V R, Sreelakshmi T P and Vishnu V C – got a rare opportunity to do an internship at the 400kV Substation at Madakkathara of KASEB. The internship was for five days from 7 April 2021 to 13 April 2021.
Madakkathara Substation is the only 400kV Substation under KSEB. It is an air insulated transmission substation that deals with 400/220/110/11 kV. Two feeders of 400 kV are from from PGCL (Udumalpett, Tamilnadu). Er Gokul in the Transmission and Construction Subdivision explained in detail all the steps from the selection of land for dam to the distribution to consumers. Er Haneesh, Assistant Executive Engineer, explained in detail the layout of the whole yard, different conductors used, ratings, transformers and protection units, etc.
SF6 circuit breakers are used in the yard and the isolators used are double breaker, single breaker, circuit breaker and panthograph. Total installed capacity of the Madakathara Substation is 1565 MVA. Throughout the internship, the students also learned many things about the transmission of electricity in different regions of Kerala and the methods adopted to maintain the supply to the consumers without any failure.
