CE Dept conducts Five-Day FDP on “Green Horizons : Advanced Materials and Techniques for Sustainable Construction

The Department of Civil Engineering equips Faculty members / Industrial experts / M.Tech M.Plan students and Research scholars with an in-depth understanding of sustainable construction principles, emphasizing eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient building techniques by conducting FDPs.

The Department of Civil Engineering, in association with IE(I) and ISTE VAST Chapters organized  a five day Faculty Development Programme (FDP)  on “Green Horizons: Advanced Materials and Techniques for Sustainable Construction” (Hybrid mode) during 30 December 2024 – 03 January 2025.

The event commenced on 30 December 2024 with an inaugural ceremony graced by the presence of eminent personalities. Dr Abhilasha P S( HoD CE Dept and Convener, Organizing Committee) offered welcome address.Dr Sunitha C (Principal) delivered presidential address The chief guest, Dr C G Nandakumar (Retired Professor, Department of Ship Technology, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kalamassery) delivered an insightful keynote address on “Present and Future of Material Performance Evaluation.”

Dr Thomas John V (Retired HoD, Civil Engineering Department, MTI Thrissur, and Chairman, IE(I), Thrissur Local Centre) and Prof Jayakumari V (Retired HoD, Civil Engineering Department, GEC Thrissur, and Section Managing Committee Member, ISTE Kerala) grace the ceremony with their esteemed presence and words of wisdom. Mr Suresh Lal (Executive Director, VICT)  offered felicitation. Ms Ponsy Paul (Asst Prof, CE Dept and Co-ordinator, Organizing Committee) proposed vote of thanks.

Day 1: 30/12/2024 (Offline Mode)

  • The inaugural ceremony was followed by the keynote address by Dr. C. G. Nandakumar.
  • The sesond session was handled by Dr C V Lal (Retired Professor & HoD, Department of Civil Engineering, Government Engineering College, Thrissur ) on “Sustainability Vs Vastushastra,” offering a unique perspective on blending tradition with modern sustainability practices.

Day 2: 31/12/2024 (Online Mode)

  • The first session, titled “Nano-Engineering in Sustainable Materials,” was conducted by Dr Mahadevan Pillai (Former Dean of the University of Calicut and Chairman & Managing Director of ANOVA Group).
  • In the second session, Dr Nikhil Bugalia (Asst Prof, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras) spoke on “System-Thinking Based Evaluation and Development Pathway for Digital Technologies for the Construction Sector.”

Day 3: 01/01/2025 (Online Mode)

  • The new year day began with a session on “Current and Future Trends in Textiles for Concrete Construction Applications” by Dr Saranya P (Postdoctoral Researcher, IIT Madras).
  • The afternoon session focused on “Smart Sustainable Infrastructure – Real-time Energy and Water Monitoring Using Smart Sensors” by Dr T G Antony Balan (Retired Chief Engineer, Central Water Commission, and Professor at Karunya University).

Day 4: 02/01/2025 (Online Mode)

  • Dr Sujatha Jose (Senior Project Officer, IoE Centre of Excellence at IIT Madras) spoke on “Implications of Steel and Hybrid Fibres for Sustainability of Structural Elements.”
  • The second session of the day was conducted by Dr Phanisri Pradeep Pratapa P (Asst Prof, IIT Madras) on “Futuristic Structures and Materials: Topology Optimization, Origami Engineering, and Metamaterials.”

Day 5: 03/01/2025 (Online Mode)

  • The final session of the FDP was delivered by Dr Piyush Chaunsali (Asso Prof,IIT Madras) on “Carbon-Neutral Construction Materials,” emphasizing cutting-edge advancements in sustainable construction practices.

The sessions witnessed active participation and enthusiastic interaction from faculty members and professionals across various institutions

The program was convened by Dr Abhilasha P S (HoD, CE Dept). Ms Ponsy Paul (Asst Prof, CE Dept) and Ms Seetha Pisharikkel (Asst Prof, CE Dept) served as and was Coordinator and  Co-coordinator respectively .
