VSEC conducts session on ‘Sustainability to Combat Global Warming -THE CLOCK IS TICKING
Vidya Social Empowerment Center (VSEC), under Vidya International Charitable Trust, has been hosting various sessions, centered around the topic of global warming aimed at providing both an informative and enjoyable learning experience, while also empowering student volunteers with knowledge and insights to drive positive change.
VSEC arranged an engaging educational ‘SAS session I’ christened ‘THE CLOCK IS TICKING: Sustainability to Combat Global Warming” on 24 January 2025.
Session Overview:
Akshay K R (S8, CSE Dept) delivered an insightful session on the significance of global warming. Ms Surabhi M S (Asst. Librarian) co-ordinated the program under the guidance of Dr Siju K C (Head, VSEC and Assoc Prof, AS Dept) and was supported by an enthusiastic group student volunteers from various engineering disciplines.Jithisha U J (S4 CSE, Dept). The session began with a soulful prayer by Ann Mariya Steephan (S6, EEE Dept), followed by a warm welcome address by Daya Rose (S4, CSE Dept). The sessions’ anchoring was actively handled by Jithisha U J (S4, CSE Dept). The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Sinan Sulaiaman (S8 ,ME Dept). Ms Aswathy Alathu Karunakaran (Asst Prof, AS Dept) and Dr Abitha M A (Asst Prof, ECE Dept) attended the session and gave feedbacks
Key Components of the Session:
- Introduction to the Session:
- The session, titled “Racing Against Time,” focused on the urgent need to combat global warming through innovative and sustainable solutions. It began with an emphasis on individual responsibility in addressing climate change. The discussion aimed to educate participants about the science behind global warming, its causes, consequences, and the role of modern technology in mitigating its impact. By making the session interactive and engaging, the goal was to raise awareness and inspire action for a more sustainable future.
- Introduction to Global Warming:
- A comprehensive explanation of global warming was provided, covering its primary causes, long-term effects, and the significance of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO?), methane (CH?), and nitrous oxide (N?O). The session highlighted how human activities—including burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial emissions—are accelerating climate change, leading to rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation.
- Interactive Questions:
- To make the session engaging, participants were asked thought-provoking questions such as the amount of water required to produce a burger or a pair of jeans. These questions helped illustrate the hidden environmental impact of daily consumption habits, prompting the audience to think critically about sustainability and resource conservation.
- Engaging Content:
- To simplify complex climate science concepts, a humorous yet educational video on cows burping was shown. This video effectively demonstrated how methane emissions from livestock significantly contribute to global warming.
Impact on Participants:
For Student Volunteers (VSEC Members):
- Enhanced Knowledge & Awareness: The session deepened the volunteers’ understanding of global warming, greenhouse gases, and sustainable technologies. Engaging with real-world environmental issues strengthened their awareness of the urgency of climate action.
- Improved Communication & Teaching Skills: Explaining complex topics like carbon capture, hydrogen fuel cells, and piezoelectric technology in a simplified and engaging manner helped the volunteers refine their communication skills. They learned how to present information effectively while keeping the audience engaged.
- Leadership & Teamwork Development: Organizing and conducting the session required collaboration, planning, and teamwork. Volunteers worked together to design interactive content, manage discussions, and maintain audience engagement, enhancing their leadership abilities.
- Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking: By addressing questions from participants and responding to unexpected discussions, volunteers improved their ability to think critically and provide well-informed answers, strengthening their problem-solving skills.
- Community Engagement & Responsibility: Leading a session on sustainability reinforced the importance of environmental responsibility. Volunteers gained a deeper appreciation for their role in spreading awareness and taking action to combat climate change within their communities.
- Inspiration & Motivation: The positive reception from the audience and the impact of the session motivated the volunteers to further explore sustainability solutions. The experience inspired them to actively seek innovative ways to contribute to a greener future.
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, the session “THE CLOCK IS TICKING: Sustainability to Combat Global Warming” successfully highlighted the urgent need to address global warming and provided participants with essential knowledge on sustainable practices to help combat its effects. It inspired students and volunteers to understand the importance of their individual roles in driving positive environmental change, fostering a sense of responsibility and commitment to protecting the planet.
