Young minds exploring Structural Engineering through Popsicle Stick Engineering Challenge
With an aim to introduce students to the fundamental principles of structural engineering through a practical, hands-on learning experience,Popsicle Stick Engineering Challenge was successfully conducted at Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Chalakudy on 29 January 2026 as part of the admission outreach activities. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 50 students, who were systematically organized into five groups to ensure effective engagement and collaborative learning.
The session commenced with an insightful introduction to Popsicle Girder Construction by Mr. Renjith R. (Asst Prof,CE Dept) He provided both group-level and individual guidance, familiarizing students with the fundamental principles of structural design, load distribution, and construction techniques using popsicle sticks. The interactive explanation enabled students to gain a basic understanding of real-world engineering concepts in a simplified and practical manner.
During the hands-on session, each group actively participated in designing and constructing their bridge models. The activity encouraged teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Upon completion, the bridge models were kept aside for drying before evaluation.
Feedback was collected from the participants to assess their learning experience and engagement level. Students expressed excitement and appreciation for the opportunity to explore engineering concepts through a practical and enjoyable activity.
The constructed models were subsequently evaluated based on their maximum load-bearing capacity, highlighting the practical understanding of structural behavior and strength. The members of the winning group were rewarded with chocolate packets in recognition of their outstanding performance. Sweets were distributed to all participants, creating a cheerful and motivating atmosphere.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing sincere gratitude to the school authorities, teachers, and participating students for their cooperation and active involvement. The event proved to be a meaningful and enriching experience, successfully fostering interest in engineering and innovative thinking among the students.
