AICTE-Vidya Student Induction Programme

The AICTE Student Induction Programme was aimed at making comfortable the newly admitted students of an institution to their new environment. The programme was also intended to help promote bonding among students, to build relations with their mentors and to give a broader view of life. At the start of the induction, the incumbents learn about the institutional policies, processes, practices, culture, and values, and their mentor groups are formed. Then the different activities start, including those which are to be done every day. This year, the Student Induction Programme was conducted in the virtual mode due to the pandemic issues without compromising on the quality and reducing the content as proposed by the AICTE.

Modules for the Programme at Vidya
  1. Universal Human Values – Students were trained in various human values through experiential learning. This session was handled by the tutors. Students discussed various human values such as Personal aspirations and Family expectations, gratitude, competition, ragging, peer influence, self-confidence, prosperity, and anger. Students discussed in their groups the various human values and they came up with outcomes for developing human values.
  2. Presentation skills – During the period students engaged in developing presentation skills. Based on the human values discussed, students discussed and developed presentation which were presented before their tutors.
  3. Talk by experts – Expert talks on topics such as Social Responsibilities, Cyber Security, Drug Abuse and addiction; and Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques.
  4. Literary Activity – Aims at developing communication skills through reading, writing, debating, etc
Inauguration

The AICTE Induction programme was formally inaugurated in an online programme held on 18 November 2020.

The newly admitted students and their parents were welcomed by Dr N Ramachandran (Prof and Head, ME Dept). Dr Saji C B, Principal, presided over the function. Dr Santhosh Prasannan, Chairman, VICT, formally inaugurated the programme. Mr Suresh Lal, Administration and Finance Director, Mr Sabu Soumian, Executive Committee Member, VICT, Dr Sudha Balagopalan, Dean Academics, Dr V N Krishnachandran, Vice-Principal and Mr Suresh K Karun, President, PTA, felicitated the programme. Mr. Hareesh K (AP, ME Dept and Convenor, Sameeksha) proposed vote of thanks.

After the inaugural session parents and students attended the online Department orientations. Following this, students had the first interaction with their tutors.

Expert Talks

Talk 1: 19 November 2020

“Social Responsibilities – Being Human”

The first invited talk of the programme was conducted on 19 November 2020 from 9.30 to 11.30 AM. The resource person was Ms Asha T V, Student Counsellor of Vidya and the the theme of the talk was “Social Responsibilities – Being Human”.

Ms. Divya Radhakrishnan (AP, AS Dept) welcomed the resource person and the participants to the session. During the course of the session, Ms Asha first introduced Vidya and its ideals. She then discussed about the responsibilities of a student towards oneself, towards the college, towards his family, towards the society and towards the nation. She described how important it is to care for oneself. One should be aware of one’s thoughts, mind and body.The talk came to an end with a Vote of Thanks by Mr. Anil Paul, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering department.

Talk 2: 20 November 2020

Cyber Issues and Traps

The second invited talk of the AICTE Induction Programme was conducted on 20 November 2020 from 9.30 to 11.30 AM. The resource persons were Assistant Police Sub-Inspector Mr. Santhosh K S and Civil Police Officer Mr Srirag P P. They handled the theme  “Cyber Issues and Traps”. Ms Lakshmi N S (AP, PE Dept) welcomed the guest speakers and the participants to the session. During the course of the session, the guest speakers talked about case studies related to debit card cloning, key logger, SMS spoofing, call spoofing, ransomware, cyber stalking, picture morphing, social trolling, profile hacking, online games, job call letter, deep fakes, dating website and camera hacking. At the end of the session, they interacted with students and clarified their doubts. The talk came to an end with a vote of thanks by Mr Biju P V (AP, ME Dept).

Talk 3: 21 November 2020

“Drug Abuse and Addiction”

The third invited talk of the AICTE Induction Programme was conducted on 21 November 2020 from 02.00 to 04.00 PM. The resource person was Dr Sebind Kumar, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical college, Thrissur. He handled the session on “Drug Abuse and Addictions”. Ms Anooja V S (AP, EEE Dept) welcomed the resource person and the participants to the session.

Dr Sebind Kumar started with his speech by sharing his recent professional experience related to the drug addiction. He then explained in detail about the following points: use vs abuse vs dependence, danger of drug abuse, bio-psycho-social causes and reward pathway in brains, Muller line illusions, ADHD and how to heal from the addiction, how to manage and eliminate anxiety, stress and anger management techniques, meaning and purpose of life. After the speech students interacted with the speaker. The talk came to an end with a vote of thanks by Mr Hareesh K (AP, ME Dept).

Talk 4: 23 November 2020

“Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques”

The fourth invited talk of the AICTE Induction Programme was conducted on 23 November 2020 from 9.30 A.M to 11.30 AM. The resource persons were Dr Vineetha Aravind who is a soft skills trainer and a psychologist with more than seven years of experience in training and counseling and Mr George C V who is an engineer and soft skills trainer with three decades of experience in the corporate world and seven years of experience in training.

Dr Mary P Varghese (Head, EEE Dept) welcomed the guest speakers and the participants to the session. During the course of the session, the guest speakers talked about several topics relatef to stress management: Eustress (beneficial stress), fight or flight, new responsibilities, panic attack, relaxation techniques, exercises for building confidence and stress release, love, difference between reacting and responding,depression and techniques to reduce them, exercises, asking for help and talking to people, techniques to make out whether one’s friends are depressed and offer a helping hand.

A lot of relaxation exercises were performed during the session and the participants thoroughly enjoyed and gave a wonderful feedback on the session. The talk came to an end with a vote of thanks by Ms Akhila R (AP, EEE Dept).

Valedictory function

The valedictory function of the programme was conducted online on 28 November 2020.

Ms Divya Radhakrishnan (AP. AS and Humanities Dept and Joint Convenor, Sameeksha) welcomed all to the function. Dr Saji CB presided over the function. Dean Academics Dr Sudha Balagopalan and Vice Principal Dr V N  Krishnachandran addressed the audience.

Students of various branches gave their feedback about the programme. They shared the experiences and how the 10-day induction programme had been a wonderful journey towards their entry to Vidya. Mr Hareesh K proposed the vote of thanks.
