CSE Dept conducts three-day online Faculty Development Program (FDP) on “Research Foundations and Perspectives of Data Science and Deep Learning”

To give exposure to the faculty members on research foundations and applications of Data Science and Deep learning from academics and industrial perspectives, the Dept of Computer Science and Engineering, in collaboration with ISTE, successfully conducted a three-day online Faculty Development Program (FDP) on “Research Foundations and Perspectives of Data Science and Deep Learning” during 12-14 February 2024.

12 February 2024
The inauguration of the FDP commenced with a silent prayer, followed by Dr Ramani Bai V (HoD, CSE Dept) delivering the welcome address. Dr  Saji C B (Principal) presided over the event with a motivating presidential address, while Mr Suresh Lal (Executive Director, VICT) provided insightful felicitation remarks. The inauguration ceremony featured Dr Shailesh Shivan (AI/ML Enthusiast, Assistant Professor, DCS, CUSAT, Cochin, Kerala) inaugurating the FDP. Ms Rejusha T R (FDP Co-ordinator Asst Prof, CSE Dept) extended heartfelt thanks during the vote of thanks, setting the stage for an intellectually engaging occasion.

After the inaugural ceremony, Dr Shailesh Shivan commenced the sessions with an insightful presentation on ‘Introduction to Data Science and Mathematical Foundations of Data Science’. Following this engaging session, the afternoon session was conducted by Dr Bindu Krishnan (Senior Statistician at Data and AI, IBM India Software Labs, Kochi). Dr. Krishnan’s session titled ‘Statistical Foundations of Data Science’ offering valuable knowledge to participants .

13 February 2024
Dr Remya K Sasi (Assistant Professor at DCS, CUSAT, Kochi) led the forenoon session titled ‘Data Exploration, Visualization, and Data Preprocessing Techniques – Illustration with all kinds of data’ Following this engaging session, the afternoon session was conducted by Dr Anoop V S (Research Officer at the School of Digital Sciences, Digital University, Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram). Dr. Anoop’s session focused on ‘Research Foundations of Data Science and Tools and Technologies for Data Science Research’ provided valuable insights into Data Science tools and technologies.

14 February 2024
On the final day of the program, Dr Shailesh Shivan conducted a session titled ‘Developing Deep Learning Models, Evaluation & Optimizations, and Case Study Demonstrations: Computer Vision Problems’ provided valuable insights into advanced topics. Following this session, Dr Jeena K (Assistant Professor at DCS, CUSAT, Cochin) discussed ‘Case Study Demonstrations: NLP Problems, Research Perspectives of Data Science – Data Sets, Publications, Funding Agencies, etc., and Feedback & Concluding Remarks’ This session enriched the participants with practical case studies and research perspectives in data science and deep learning.

During the valedictory function, Dr. Ramani Bai V provided concluding remarks summarizing the key takeaways from the FDP, highlighting its enriching content and interactive nature. Participants shared their valuable feedback, emphasizing the program’s success in providing theoretical research foundations and practical applications in data science and deep learning. Ms Remya K R ( FDP Co-ordinator, Asst Prof CSE Dept) extended heartfelt thanks, officially concluding the event on a positive note.
