VSEC Empowerment Programme at SOS Children’s Village Thrissur

To provide educational support and introduce to the mathematical concepts and basic electrical circuits, an Empowerment Programme was organized at SOS Village Mulayam in collaboration with Vidya Social Empowerment Center (VSEC) VSEC and IEEE Smart Village (ISV) on 13 April 2024.

• Mathematics Session by Dr. Siju K C

Dr Siju K.C (Head of VSEC, Asso Prof, AS Dept) conducted an activity oriented session on a math concept. She engaged the children in a hands-on activity to measure the circumference and diameter of a circle using thread. Through this activity, the concept of “Pi” was introduced andexplained. Student volunteers assisted in facilitating the activity and further elaborated on the importance of the constant pi.

• Introduction to ISV and Snap Circuits by Dr. Sudha Balagopalan:

Dr Sudha Balagopalan (Dean- Academics) took over the session and provided an overview of IEEE Smart Village (ISV) initiatives. She introduced Snap Circuits provided by ISV and distributed two circuits to the children. The purpose and basic functioning of these circuits were explained to the children, aiming to spark their interest in electrical engineering concepts.

• On Student Volunteers:
o Gain exposure to organizing and conducting educational sessions.
o Develop skills in communication and leadership.
• On SOS Children:
o Acquire knowledge about mathematical calculations and the significance of the value pi.
o Got introduced to basic electrical circuits, providing them with potential insights into future STEM endeavors.

The Empowerment Programme at SOS Children’s Village Thrissur was both enjoyable and informative for all participants. It not only provided valuable learning experiences for the student volunteers but also enriched the knowledge and exposure of the children at the village. The positive feedback received indicates the success of the event, and there is a keen interest in future visits. Gifts were distributed to the children as a token of appreciation, and the team looks forward to further opportunities to engage with the community.
