VSEC Head delivers session on ‘How Math Guides You Home’

Established by the Vidya International Charitable Trust, the Vidya Social Empowerment Center (VSEC) focuses on impactful initiatives that promote social empowerment and community upliftment.

Dr. Siju K. C (Head, VSEC and Asso. Prof, AS Dept) conducted an enlightening online session titled “How Math Guides You Home” on 21June 2025, for the scholarship recipients of the Kovilagath Foundation.

The session explored the mathematical principles behind GPS technology, using interactive exercises to demonstrate how triangulation and intersecting circles from satellite signals help determine a user’s location. Participants actively engaged in hands-on activities, such as plotting points and drawing circles on graph paper to simulate GPS functionality, while also gaining insights into real-world applications in navigation apps like Google Maps.

Dr. Siju emphasized the importance of a fourth satellite for increased accuracy and drew comparisons between modern GPS systems and ancient navigation methods, such as star mapping and compass use. The session concluded with a practical project assignment to reinforce key concepts and stimulate critical thinking.

This insightful talk not only deepened students’ understanding of the role of mathematics in technology but also aligned perfectly with the foundation’s mission to foster academic curiosity and innovation.
