Academic Enrichment Session on Probability by VSEC

Vidya Social Empowerment Center (VSEC), operating under the aegis of the Vidya International Charitable Trust (VICT), consistently organizes a wide range of initiatives aimed at nurturing students’ talents and promoting their holistic growth in both personal and professional spheres.

Dr. Siju K. C (Head, VSEC and Asso. Prof, AS Dept) conducted an online academic enrichment session on 31 January 2026 from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm for the scholarship students of the Kovilakath Foundation. The session was based on the learning material titled “From Daily Life to Probability – Understanding Chances Around Us”.

The primary objective of the session was to develop a clear and intuitive understanding of probability by connecting mathematical ideas to students’ everyday experiences. Instead of beginning with formulas and abstract definitions, the session encouraged learners to observe familiar real-life situations such as sharing chocolates, monitoring mobile battery usage, weather conditions affecting games periods, waiting time for buses, and the likelihood of homework being checked in classrooms.

Through guided discussion and reflection, students were helped to recognize the concepts of chance, likelihood, and uncertainty in a natural and relatable manner.Emphasis was placed on understanding that some events are more likely to occur than others and that numerical reasoning enables meaningful comparison of such chances.Only after establishing this conceptual foundation was the formal definition and basic formula of probability introduced, reinforcing the idea that careful observation and logical reasoning precede mathematical expression.

The session followed an interactive, student-centered approach with continuous questioning and active participation.The use of real-life examples significantly reduced fear and confusion often associated with probability, making the topic approachable and meaningful.
