EEE Dept publishes paper on Semi-Automatic Shirt Ironing and Folding Machine in the International Journal of Innovative Research in Technology
Vidya faculty and students implement simple automation to reduce manual labor, increase efficiency, and deliver a uniform finish on garments
The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) at Vidya Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), Thrissur, has achieved another notable research milestone with the publication of a paper titled “Semi Automatic Shirt Ironing and Folding Machine” in the International Journal of Innovative Research in Technology (IJIRT), Volume 12, Issue 8, pages 2284–2287. The paper carries the Unique Paper ID 190514.

The research work was carried out by Abin T. J.(S8,EEE Dept), Vishnu P. V.(S8,EEE Dept), Swathi Krishna P. S.(S8,EEE Dept), Veena T. V.(S8,EEE Dept) under the guidance of Mr. Rajesh S. K. (Asso Prof – Sr Grade,EEE Dept) and Dr. Neenu Thomas (Asst Prof – Seln Grade,EEE Dept) .The study focuses on the development of an innovative home automation system designed to simplify two of the most time-consuming household chores—ironing and folding clothes.
The proposed Semi-Automatic Shirt Ironing and Folding Machine integrates a heated ironing plate and an automated folding mechanism into a single compact system. The machine employs an Arduino-based control unit to coordinate the operation of servo motors, temperature sensors, and relays, ensuring precise and safe performance. The ironing process is carried out using a heating plate adapted from a conventional iron box, while a motor-driven folding mechanism neatly folds garments after ironing.
A key feature of the system is its emphasis on safety and reliability. Temperature monitoring and relay isolation mechanisms help prevent overheating, while automatic power shutdown functions protect fabrics from damage and enhance user safety. The servo-actuated folding arrangement ensures consistent and repeatable folding results, reducing manual effort and improving efficiency.
Designed primarily for households and small-scale laundry applications, the machine offers an affordable, energy-efficient, and user-friendly solution for garment care. By combining ironing and folding operations into a single automated appliance, the system significantly reduces the time and labor required for daily clothing maintenance while ensuring uniform quality.
The publication highlights the department’s commitment to promoting innovation in automation, embedded systems, and smart home technologies. It also demonstrates the successful collaboration between students and faculty members in developing practical engineering solutions that enhance convenience and improve everyday life through technology.
