Engineers’ Day Celebration – EEE Students explore solar innovation for a sustainable future
To mark the Engineers’ Day on 15 September 2026, the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) organized an engaging expert session titled “Engineering a Sustainable Future through Solar Innovation”.
The session was handled by Mr. Joyal Pulikkan, (Managing Director, JO AND JO Infra Solutions, EEE Dept) . Drawing from his professional experience in the solar energy sector, he introduced students to the practical aspects of planning and installing solar power systems for residential applications.
A major focus of the session was household electrical load calculation, which is an essential step in determining the appropriate capacity of a solar power system. Students learned how electricity bills can be analysed to identify the monthly energy consumption of a household and how factors such as available rooftop area, solar radiation, shading conditions and anticipated future electricity requirements influence the selection of a suitable solar system.
The resource person also familiarised students with the major components of a solar power system, including solar panels, inverters, mounting structures, cables, safety and protection devices, and grid-connection arrangements. The session helped students understand how these components work together to convert solar energy into usable electrical power.
The discussion also covered the importance of KSEB approval and grid feasibility for on-grid solar installations. Students were introduced to the factors considered while assessing grid feasibility, including the capacity of the transformer, distribution network, service connection, energy meter and protection system. The importance of checking transformer loading, particularly in areas where the transformer is already operating under a high load, was also highlighted.
Through practical examples and industry-oriented explanations, the session helped students connect their classroom knowledge of electrical loads, power systems, renewable energy and grid integration with real-world solar installation practices.
The session provided students with a clear and practical understanding of residential solar energy systems, electrical load assessment, KSEB requirements and grid connectivity, while highlighting the role of solar energy in promoting a cleaner and more sustainable future.
The Engineers’ Day initiative thus served as a meaningful platform for students to explore renewable-energy technologies and sustainable engineering practices, reinforcing the importance of innovation and practical knowledge in addressing the energy challenges of the future.
| The Editorial Team of News & Events joins the entire Vidya fraternity in extending heartiest appreciation to Mr. Joyal on the successful conduct of the session that empowers students with actionable engineering competencies aligned with global sustainability goals, reinforcing the vital role electrical engineers play in driving clean energy solutions !!! |
