‘The Math You Can Observe’ – An online session by Head of VSEC

Established under the aegis of the Vidya International Charitable Trust, the Vidya Social Empowerment Center (VSEC) is dedicated to implementing meaningful initiatives aimed at fostering social empowerment and community development.

Dr. Siju K. C (Head, VSEC and Asso. Prof, AS Dept)  delivered an engaging online session titled “The Math You Can Observe” on 17 May , 2025, The session focused on revealing how mathematics is deeply embedded in everyday life, using practical examples and interactive activities to bring the subject to life.

The session was conducted from 7:45 PM to 8:45 PM for the eighth-grade scholarship recipients of the Kovilakath Foundation, a charitable organization committed to empowering rural children through education. Organized as part of the foundation’s Academic Excellence Programme, the event aimed to make mathematical concepts more approachable and meaningful for young learners.

Dr. Siju skillfully illustrated fundamental mathematical ideas—particularly fractions—through familiar, real-world scenarios such as dividing objects equally, measuring food portions, and organizing daily routines. A key hands-on component of the session involved paper-partitioning exercises, where students physically divided sheets of paper into equal parts to internalize the concept of fractions.

The presentation also explored broader applications of mathematics, including image resizing using grid-based techniques and understanding bandwidth distribution principles. Throughout the session, Dr. Siju emphasized the value of observing and experiencing mathematical principles in daily contexts, moving beyond rote learning to foster deeper conceptual understanding.

The session was well-received by the students, who participated with enthusiasm and curiosity. By effectively connecting abstract concepts to tangible experiences, Dr. Siju succeeded in making mathematics more accessible, engaging, and relevant to all attendees.
