VSEC Head handles an insightful session on ‘How Maths Helps Predict the Weather’

Dr. Siju K. C (Head, VSEC and Asso. Prof, AS Dept)  delivered an  online session insightful session on ‘How Maths Helps Predict the Weather’ for the scholars of the Kovilagath Foundation on 26 July 2025.

The session highlighted the pivotal role of mathematics in weather forecasting, making complex concepts accessible to a broad audience. Dr. Siju explained how tools like thermometers, anemometers, and rain gauges collect data. This data is then analyzed using mathematical principles such as averages (e.g., for temperature calculations), probability (e.g., for rain predictions), and speed-distance relationships (e.g., for storm arrival times). A DIY rain gauge experiment was also demonstrated to encourage hands-on learning.The session effectively bridged the gap between mathematics and meteorology for attendees.
