Plastic waste collection drive at Chavakkad Beach by NSS

As part of the Plastic Waste Collection Challenge, the NSS Unit of Vidya organised a plastic waste collection drive at Chavakkad Beach. The initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness, responsible waste management, and active community participation in maintaining clean and sustainable public spaces.

A total of 35 enthusiastic NSS volunteers actively participated in the campaign. The drive focused on cleaning Chavakkad Beach, a prominent tourist destination that often faces plastic waste accumulation due to heavy visitor activity. The volunteers worked with great dedication throughout the morning, systematically collecting and segregating plastic waste from the shoreline and surrounding areas.

Through their collective efforts, nearly 20 kilograms of plastic waste were collected and later disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner by following proper waste management practices. The activity not only contributed to improving the cleanliness of the beach but also served as a practical awareness programme highlighting the harmful effects of plastic pollution on marine and coastal ecosystems.

The drive formed an integral part of the NSS Unit’s continuous efforts in support of the Swachh Bharat Mission, reflecting the unit’s strong commitment to community welfare and sustainable environmental practices.

The smooth and efficient execution of the programme was made possible through the effective leadership of the NSS Volunteer Secretaries-Sonu Sunny (S6,ME Dept), Rashmi V R (S6, ECE Dept), Manu K M (S6, EEE Dept), Niranjan Agnivesh K B (S5, ME Dept) and Alanteena (S6, EEE Dept)—whose teamwork and dedication ensured the success of the event.

The activity was conducted under the guidance and supervision of the NSS Programme Officers, Mr. Ranjith E R (Asst Prof,ME Dept) and Ms. Delmy David V (Asst Prof,CSE Dept) Their constant support, encouragement, and close monitoring played a crucial role in the effective planning and implementation of the programme.

Overall, the plastic waste collection drive stood as a meaningful initiative towards fostering environmental responsibility among students and reinforcing the values of service, sustainability, and social commitment upheld by the National Service Scheme.
