CE Dept hosts “Let’s Draft the Plan Smartly” (SketchUp Pro for Beginners)
With an aim to warmly welcome the newly admitted B.Tech Civil Engineering students and familiarise them with the academic environmentThe Department of Civil Engineering organised an introductory programme titled “LET’S DRAFT THE PLAN SMARTLY” for the newly admitted B.Tech Civil Engineering students of the 2026 admission batch on 14 July 2026 at the Oracle Academy Centre of Excellence. The programme was attended by 28 students along with all faculty members of the department. The programme aimed to familiarise students with the fundamentals of engineering drafting using SketchUp Pro and to provide an overview of the academic and career opportunities available in Civil Engineering.
The programme commenced with a prayer by Ms. Yamini Vijayan (S7,CE Dept) followed by a warm welcome address by Dr. Abhilasha P. S.(HoD, CE Dept). She introduced the department, highlighted its achievements, and encouraged the newly admitted students to actively participate in curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities. The group tutors, Ms. Chithira Ajeeth (Asst Prof,CE Dept) and Mr. Kiran Babu A. R.(Asst Prof,CE Dept) were also introduced to the students, who assured them of continuous academic and personal guidance. The other faculty members interacted with the students and helped create a welcoming and supportive environment.
The technical session was handled by Mr. Renjith R.(Asst Prof,CE Dept), who conducted a hands-on session on SketchUp Pro for Beginners. Students were introduced to the software interface, essential tools, basic 3D modelling concepts, and simple modelling techniques. The practical session provided students with valuable initial exposure to a digital design tool used in the Civil Engineering profession, with faculty members providing guidance and assistance throughout the activities.
The afternoon session featured an orientation on “Opportunities in Civil Engineering” by Dr. Khadeeja Priyan (Prof,CE Dept).The session highlighted diverse career and higher-study opportunities, including research, government services, construction management, consultancy, entrepreneurship, sustainable infrastructure, and emerging digital construction technologies. Students also interacted with the faculty members and received guidance regarding their academic and professional development.
At the end of the programme, feedback was collected from the participants. The students appreciated the informative and interactive nature of the sessions and expressed that the programme helped them gain a better understanding of Civil Engineering, its career opportunities, and the supportive academic environment of the department. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Anjali P. Sasidharan (Asso Prof,CE Dept) who expressed gratitude to the resource persons, faculty members, student volunteers, and participants for their support and active participation. The programme was successfully conducted and served as an effective platform for welcoming the new batch and fostering a sense of belonging, motivation, and enthusiasm among the students as they began their engineering journey.
