CE Dept organizes an industrial visit to the Sewage Treatment Plant at Chakkumkandam, Guruvayur
As part of its continuous efforts to provide experiential learning opportunities,the CE Department organized the industrial visit to provide students with firsthand exposure to the collection, treatment, sludge management, and disposal of sewage
The Department of Civil Engineering organized an industrial visit to the Sewage Treatment Plant at Chakkumkandam, Guruvayur, on 19 August 2026 for 59 Semester 5 B.Tech. Civil Engineering students. The students were accompanied by Dr. Anjali P. Sasidharan, Associate Professor, and Ms. Seetha Pisharikkel, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering.
During the visit, Mr. Saji Jose Thalakkottoor (Operator/In-charge) explained the functioning of the treatment plant and the operation of its various treatment units. The students observed the different stages of sewage treatment, beginning with the pre-collection tank and screening, followed by grit removal and equalization. The sewage then undergoes oil and grease removal before entering four aeration tanks for biological treatment through the activated sludge process.
The subsequent stages of treatment, including clarification, sludge collection,and dewatering, were also explained in detail. The treated sludge is dewatered using a filter press and transferred to the designated storage yard. The clarified water undergoes further tertiary treatment through pressure sand filters and activated carbon filters, followed by chlorination before its final discharge through the designated outfall.
The students also gained valuable insights into the underground drainage network of Guruvayur town, which is divided into three zones. This helped them understand the collection and conveyance of sewage from different parts of the urban area to the treatment facility.
The industrial visit served as a valuable experiential learning opportunity, strengthening the students’ understanding of sewage treatment processes, wastewater management, sludge handling, and environmental protection. The practical exposure also enabled them to appreciate the crucial role of civil engineers in planning, operating, and maintaining sustainable wastewater management systems.
The visit concluded with the students gaining a clearer understanding of how the principles studied in the classroom are translated into practical applications in real-world wastewater treatment facilities. The experience further enhanced their awareness of sustainable environmental practices and the importance of effective wastewater management in developing healthy and resilient communities.
