CSE dept organizes Alumni Talk on ‘Introduction to Shopify – E-Commerce Platform and Development’

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) provides students with opportunities for direct interaction with industry professionals and practical exposure by conducting various activities. 

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Vidya Academy of Science & Technology, organized an Expert Alumni Talk on “Introduction to Shopify – E-Commerce Platform and Development” on 11 September 2026 from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM through Google Meet. The session was delivered by Mr. Rahul N Manesh (Associate Engineer, Litmus7, 2020–24 batch,CSE Dept) . 

Objectives
• To introduce students to Shopify as a cloud-based e-commerce platform.
• To familiarize students with the major components of an online store, including storefronts, products, inventory,
cart, checkout, payments, orders, and customer management.
• To provide an overview of the Shopify development ecosystem, including Liquid, APIs, webhooks, and Shopify
CLI.
• To demonstrate practical aspects of Shopify theme and storefront development through a live demonstration.
• To facilitate direct interaction between students and a CSE alumnus working in the software industry.
• To connect classroom learning with real-world software development practices and career-oriented technologies

During the session, the resource person introduced students to Shopify as a cloud-based e-commerce platform and explained the major components of an online store, including storefronts, products, inventory, shopping cart, checkout, payments, orders, and customer management. He also provided an overview of the Shopify development ecosystem, covering technologies and tools such as Liquid, APIs, webhooks, and Shopify CLI. The session further highlighted the possibilities of extending Shopify through applications and integrations related to payments, shipping, marketing, and ERP systems. A live demonstration of the Shopify administration and theme-development environment was conducted, enabling students to understand the practical implementation of Shopify themes and Liquid-based development.

Outcome

Faculty members also participated in the session. Dr. Suhaila K  (Asso Prof – Sr Grade, CSE Dept) and Ms. Ashitha A  (Asst Prof, CSE Dept) addressed the session and contributed to the interaction. Mr. Vishnu N M (Alumni Coordinator & Asst Prof, CSE Dept). coordinated the programme and participated in the session. As a student representative, Aaron Thalakkottor Sooraj (S3, CSE Dept) shared a review of the session on behalf of the participating students, providing a student perspective on the learning experience.

The Expert Alumni Talk provided students with practical awareness of Shopify and the broader e-commerce development ecosystem. Students gained exposure to the structure of an online store, Shopify’s development tools and technologies, and the practical workflow involved in customizing an e-commerce storefront. The live demonstration helped bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and real-world implementation. The interaction with an alumnus currently working in the software industry provided students with an opportunity to understand industry practices and the relevance of contemporary development platforms.

The participation and remarks from faculty members and the student review by Aaron Thalakkottor Sooraj added further value to the interactive nature of the programme.
