Vidya hosts International Conference on Discrete and Applied Mathematics 2020

The Centre for Studies in Discrete Mathematics (CSDM), an initiative of the Department of Applied Science of Vidya, organized a two-day International Conference on Discrete and Applied Mathematics (ICDAM – 2020) during 18 – 19 September 2020. The Conference was held in the virtual mode due to the current pandemic situation. The International Conference was aimed at providing a platform to discuss the current research areas in discrete mathematics and to introduce different domains of applied mathematics. The conference attracted around 500 registrations from all over the world and received 49 papers for presentation. The Review Committee recommended 26 papers for presentation in the conference.

Compendium releasing ceremony
Prof Dr Biswa Nath Datta

In a brief ceremony held at 8.30 am on 16 September 2020, Prof Dr Biswa Nath Datta, Distinguished Research Professor, Northen Illilnois University released the Compendium of Abstracts of the Conference. Before its formal release, Dr Siju K C (AP, AS Dept), who had compiled and edited the Compendium,  introduced the same to all present.

Inaugural ceremony
Dr Rajasree M S

The conference was inaugurated on 18 September 2020 by  Dr Rajasree M S,  Vice-Chancellor, APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. Er G Mohanachandran, (Executive  Director, VICT) presided over the inaugural function. Dr Saji C B (Principal) welcomed all the dignitaries and delegates. Dr V N Krishnachandran (Vice-Principal), Conference Chairman, gave an overview of the conference. Dr Sudha Balagopalan (Dean-Academics) gave a briefing about the keynote speakers of the conference. Felicitation were offered by Dr Sunny Kuriakose (Academic Secretery, Kerala Mathematical Association), Er P K Asokan (Chief Partron, VICT) and Dr B  Anil (Academic Director, VICT). Conference convener Dr Jiby Jose (Prof and Head, AS Dept) proposed the vote of thanks.

Technical sessions

Day 1

Prof Dr Biswa Nath Datta (Northern Illinoise University, USA) delivered a talk on “Machine Learning, Statistical Regression and Numerical Optimisation” in the morning session. It was a very useful session for beginners in machine learning. More than 300 delegates attended the session. In the afternoon session, the first talk was by  Dr V  N Krishnachandran  (Vice-Principal) on “Contemporaneousness of medieval Kerala mathematics” and the second talk was by Dr Sonia Balagopalan (Dublin University, Ireland)  on “Structure and Symmetry”.

Day 2

There were two invite talks. One of the talks was by Prof  Dr Sunil Mathew (Asst Professor, NIT Calicut) on “A new Approach to Weighted Graph Theory” and the second talk was by Dr Sr Germina K A (Head and Associate Professor,  Central University, Kerala) on “Measurement of structural balance in a signed network”.

Paper presentations

The selected papers were presented in five sessions in the Conference. Three of the sessions were held on the first day and the papers presented were mainly on graph theory, fuzzy graphs and applied mathematics. The sessions were chaired by  Dr Sudev N K (Asso Professor, CHRIST University, Bangalore), Dr Jiby Jose (Prof and head, AS Dept) and Dr Siju K C (AP, AS Dept) respectively.

Two of the paper presentation sessions were held on the second day. They were chaired by Dr Susanth C (Asso Professor, AS Dept) and Dr Siju K C (AP, AS Dept).

Valedictory Function

The valedictory function was held on 19 September 2020 at 3.30 pm. Dr Saji C B delivered the presidential address. Prof Dr V N Krishnachandran, Conference Chairman,  delivered the valedictory address. Ms Ida David (AP, AS Dept) gave an overview of the conference. Dr Susanth C (Asso Professor, AS Dept) welcomed all the dignitaries. Participants from all over the world shared very positive feedback during the valedictory session. On the occasion, most of the participants commented that the topics discussed at the conference were very helpful in their current research. Ms Bittu L Lambi (Asso Professor, AS Dept) proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was concluded at 4.30 pm.

There was also live streaming on YouTube to reach the benefits of the conference to more people. The news about the conference  appeared in leading news papers.
