Kerala on the brink of another flood? Recalling NSS volunteers’ services during the great deluges of 2018 and 2019
Perhaps due to the vagaries of nature and the unexpected and sudden formation of low atmospheric pressure zones in the seas around the Indian subcontinent, ranis have been lashing the length and breadth of Kerala for the last few days. The authorities have issued warnings about the possibility of an imminent flood like situation developing in most low lying areas in Kerala. According to media reports, at least 35 people have died till 18 October 2021 in landslides and floods triggered by heavy rains in southern Kerala state. The State Govt have ordered the closure of all educational institutions till 25 October 2021.
At this juncture, let us recall with humility and pride the great services rendered by the NSS volunteers of Vidya during the historic great floods in Kerala in 2018 and 2019. As a tribute to their services, the Editorial Team of News & Events would like reproduce some of the stories that appeared in the pages of News & Events. This is not to give a total picture of their services but only to give a hint of their selfless sacrifices in helping to mitigate the suffering of the flood affected people all over Kerala.
