Literary & Debate Club commemorates Gandhi Jayanti with a stimulating Group Discussion on the modern relevance of Gandhian philosophy

The Literary and Debate Club of Vidya encourage students to build a constructive environment for students to articulate diverse perspectives, debate complex social issues, and practice respectful dialogue.
As part of the Gandhi Jayanti observance, an engaging and thought-provoking Group Discussion was organised  on 25 September 2026, under the initiative of the Literary and Debate C The programme was designed to provide students with a meaningful platform to reflect on the contemporary relevance of Gandhian values and their application to pressing environmental concerns
The session commenced with an interaction by Ms Surabhi M S (Convener, Literary and Debate Club, Asst Librarian)and Ms Kalyani Vijayakumar (Convener, Literary and Debate Club, Asst Prof, CE Dept), who encouraged the participants to actively engage with the theme, express their perspectives confidently and approach the discussion with openness and critical thinking. Their guidance helped establish an engaging and purposeful environment for the discussion.
The Group Discussion brought together six student participants, who actively engaged in an open and constructive exchange of ideas. The discussion explored the relationship between Gandhian principles and contemporary environmental responsibility, with participants reflecting on themes such as simple living, responsible consumption, conservation of natural resources, waste management, sustainability and collective responsibility.
Programme Outcome

The Group Discussion provided students with a valuable opportunity to participate in a constructive and intellectually stimulating activity. The programme helped students to:

  • Develop greater awareness of the relevance of Gandhian values in contemporary environmental issues.
  • Strengthen critical thinking and analytical abilities through meaningful discussion.
  • Improve confidence and fluency in expressing ideas before a group.
  • Develop the ability to listen to and respectfully respond to diverse viewpoints.
  • Understand environmental protection as an individual as well as collective responsibility.
  • Reflect upon sustainable practices that can be incorporated into everyday student life.
  • Connect Gandhian principles with present-day environmental challenges.
  • Recognise the importance of responsible consumption and conservation of natural resources.
  • Develop greater appreciation for constructive dialogue and civic responsibility.
The programme was effectively coordinated by Ms Surabhi and Ms Kalyani, with the active support of Aavani K. Shine (Coordinator, Literary and Debate Club) and the participating students. The coordinated efforts of the faculty and student team ensured the smooth conduct of the discussion and contributed to making the programme an engaging and purposeful Gandhi Jayanti initiative
