Vidya hosts session on ‘Opportunities and Benefits of joining IEEE’

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)  plays a pivotal role in developing global standards through the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA), influencing industries such as power and energy, artificial intelligence, and consumer electronics. It is also globally recognized for its highly cited journals and publications, contributing significantly to academic and industrial research worldwide.

Vidya hosted an IEEE Talk on “Opportunities and Benefits of Joining IEEE” on 18 September 2025.The session was organized for first-year (S1) students and existing IEEE student members of VAST.

The primary objective of the program was to increase IEEE student membership and strengthen IEEE activities within the institution by making students aware of the advantages and opportunities associated with IEEE membership.

The resource person for the event was Mr. Thomas K Gimmy (Software Developer, IBM) who also serves as the Secretary, Membership Development Team, IEEE Kerala Section.

The program began with a welcome address by Mr. Santumon S D (IEEE Faculty Advisor, VAST, Asst Prof, ECE Dept), followed by an insightful session by the resource person.

Mr. Thomas K Gimmy elaborated on:

• The importance of IEEE membership for students in developing technical and professional skills.

• The various IEEE resources, such as journals, webinars, and professional networks, available to members.

• The global activities and initiatives of IEEE, highlighting how students can participate in conferences, competitions, and research collaborations.

He also showcased several slides illustrating IEEE’s worldwide impact and concluded the talk with an interactive question–answer session, where students actively participated.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Mohammed Hashim ( Student Counsellor, IEEE VAST, S3, ME Dept), expressing gratitude to the speaker and participants.

The session witnessed the enthusiastic participation of over 400 first-year students, reflecting strong interest and engagement. The talk successfully enhanced awareness of IEEE’s mission, motivated students to join IEEE, and strengthened the institution’s IEEE community.
