Seven Days of Service and Social Commitment: NSS Special Camp 2025
With an aim to enhance students’ social responsibility, leadership, and teamwork through community service initiatives,National Service Scheme (NSS) Units 101, 200 and 663 of Vidya Academy of Science and Technology successfully conducted a Seven-Day Special Residential Camp from 23-29 December 2025 at Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School, Kunnamkulam under the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University NSS Cell.
The camp aimed at personality development through community service, leadership training, and social awareness. The major project of the camp was the “Vidyuth Suraksha Programme”, implemented in collaboration with the Wadakkanchery KSEB Section. The programme focused on energy conservation, electrical safety awareness, identification of electrical hazards, issuing safety notices, and public education through house visits and wall paintings.
The Maanasagramam Survey was conducted on the final day to understand the mental and social well-being of the community.
Day 1 – 23 December 2025
The camp commenced with camp preparation at 10:30 AM, followed by flag hoisting at 11:30 AM and registration at 12:00 PM. Volunteers from NSS Units 101, 200, and 663 actively participated in organizing the venue and arrangements.
The inaugural function featured a welcome speech by Mr. Ranjith E. R.(NSS Program Officer, Asst Prof, ME Dept), a presidential address by Dr. Sunitha C (Principal), an inaugural address by Ms. Sonisha (Municipal Councillor), felicitations by the Headmistress of Government Model Girls HSS, Mr. Rajesh S K (NSS Program Officer, Asso Prof, EEE Dept) and Ms. Delmy David V (NSS Program Officer, Asst Prof, CSE Dept). The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Volunteer Secretary.
After the inaugural session, volunteers were oriented about the Vidyuth Suraksha Programme, its objectives, field methodology, interaction with the public, and coordination with the Wadakkanchery KSEB section. The day ended with cultural programmes, camp review, and group meeting, where responsibilities were assigned.
Day 2 – 24 December 2025
The day began with yoga, physical exercises, and morning assembly.Volunteers initiated field-level project work under the Vidyuth Suraksha Programme by conducting house-to-house visits in areas covered by the Wadakkanchery KSEB section.
Project activities included:
- Creating awareness on energy conservation and responsible electricity usage
- Educating households on electrical safety measures
- Checking damaged wiring, loose connections, unsafe extensions, and overloaded sockets
- Identifying low-hanging electric lines and exposed conductors
- Noting trees and branches dangerously close to electricity lines
- Issuing safety notices and guidance to residents
In the afternoon, a session by Mr. M. G. Praveen (State Convener, IAPC Kerala) focused on the importance of palliative care, compassion-driven service, and the role of youth volunteers in supporting patients and families facing chronic illness. The talk sensitized volunteers towards empathy, social responsibility, and community-based care, reinforcing the humanitarian values promoted through NSS activities.
Day 3 – 25 December 2025
Volunteers continued the Vidyuth Suraksha Programme with more systematic inspections and public interactions. Emphasis was given to:
- Safe use of electrical appliances
- Importance of proper earthing
- Avoidance of illegal connections and overloading
- Encouraging residents to report hazards to KSEB authorities
In the afternoon, Ms. Smitha Kodanat (Child Psychologist & Career Counselor) conducted an informative session on mental health, stress management, emotional well-being, and career planning.
This was followed by an NRPF (National Road Protection Force) orientation session by the NRPF Student Regional Coordinator from Royal Engineering College, which introduced road safety initiatives, accident prevention strategies, and the role of NSS volunteers in traffic awareness programmes.
The day ended with cultural programmes and reflection meetings.
Day 4 – 26 December 2025
The Vidyuth Suraksha Programme continued with focused attention on hazard identification and documentation. Volunteers coordinated with KSEB officials and local residents to report unsafe electrical conditions and ensure timely corrective action.
In the afternoon, an orientation session on the “Rudhirasena” flagship programme was conducted by the Thrissur–Palakkad NSS Student Regional Coordinators:
- Sooraj Mohan (Royal Engineering College)
- Jithisha U J (Vidya Academy of Science and Technology)
The session emphasized voluntary blood donation, emergency response, and the role of NSS volunteers in saving lives during medical emergencies. The day concluded with cultural programs and camp evaluation.
Day 5 – 27/12/2025
Volunteers continued intensive house visits and safety awareness programmes as part of the Vidyuth Suraksha Programme. Safety notices were issued wherever immediate risks were identified, and residents were advised on corrective measures.
In the afternoon, an inspiring session titled “From Volunteer to Voice: An NSS Journey” by R J Arjun motivated volunteers by sharing real-life experiences, leadership lessons, and the transformative impact of NSS activities. Cultural programmes and review meetings followed.
Day 6 – 28 December 2025
As part of the Vidyuth Suraksha Programme, volunteers carried out wall painting activities at selected public locations. The paintings conveyed strong and visually impactful messages related to:
- Electrical safety precautions
- Energy conservation
- Safe handling of electricity
In the afternoon, Mr. Arun K L (HoD, Mechanical Engineering, Vidya Academy of Science and Technology, Technical Campus, Kilimanoor) delivered a session on the role of NSS volunteers in personal and social development, highlighting discipline, teamwork, leadership, and ethical responsibility. The day concluded with cultural activities and reflection meetings.
Day 7 – 29 December 2025
On the final day, volunteers were divided into two groups:
- One group continued wall painting work to reinforce electrical safety awareness.
- The other group conducted the Maanasagramam Survey, collecting data related to mental health, social conditions, and community well-being through structured interaction with residents.
The camp concluded with camp cleaning activities and the valedictory function, where volunteers shared experiences and feedback. The programme officially concluded at 12:30 PM.
The Seven-Day Special Camp of NSS Units 101, 200, and 663 was successfully completed as per the schedule. The Vidyuth Suraksha Programme, implemented in collaboration with the Wadakkanchery KSEB Section, significantly improved public awareness on electrical safety and energy conservation. The orientation sessions on NRPF and Rudhirasena, along with the Maanasagramam Survey, enriched the volunteers’ social awareness and service orientation. Overall, the camp played a vital role in developing leadership qualities, discipline, teamwork, and social commitment among the volunteers.
