NSS Swachhata Initiative for Coastal Cleanliness and Environmental Conservation

In continuation of its environmental conservation and Swachhata initiatives, the NSS Units of Vidya Academy of Science and Technology organized a Beach Cleaning Activity at Chavakkad Beach on 28 August 2026. The programme was conducted as part of the unit’s sustained commitment towards reducing plastic pollution, promoting cleanliness, and encouraging responsible waste management in coastal areas. The activity was conducted under the guidance of Mr. Shameer (Health Inspector, Chavakkad)  whose valuable support and guidance contributed to the smooth execution of the programme.

Objectives of the Program:

  • To promote Swachhata, coastal cleanliness, environmental conservation, and reduction of plastic pollution.
  • To create awareness among volunteers and the public about proper waste management, responsible disposal, and maintaining clean public spaces.

A total of 25 NSS volunteers actively participated in the cleaning drive. Before commencing the activity, the volunteers were briefed on safe waste handling practices, waste segregation, Swachhata, and the importance of responsible waste disposal. The volunteers then carried out a systematic cleaning operation across different zones of the beach, ensuring maximum coverage within the available time.

During the drive, approximately 30 kg of plastic and other non-biodegradable waste was collected. The collected waste was carefully segregated and subsequently handed over to the Chavakkad Municipality for proper disposal and further processing.

An additional highlight of the programme was the informal awareness interaction conducted by NSS volunteers with beach visitors. The volunteers encouraged the public to minimize plastic usage, avoid littering, segregate waste, and adopt responsible disposal practices. This added an awareness component to the cleaning activity and helped extend the message of Swachhata to the wider public.

The programme was carried out with the enthusiastic involvement of the NSS Volunteer Secretaries: Sachin Mathew (S5, CSE Dept), Prakeerthana Baiju (S5, AIML Dept), and Muhammed Bilal A A (S5, EEE Dept).

The programme was coordinated under the guidance of Mr. Rajesh S K NSS (NSS Programme Officer, Asso Prof,EEE Dept) Mr. Ranjith E R (Programme Officer, Asst Prof,ME Dept)
