Add-on course on “Designing Spaces : A Hands-on Approach with AutoCAD” for S2 B.Tech CE Students
To equip students with fundamental CAD skills and the ability to prepare professional-quality 2D architectural drawings, the Department of Civil Engineering conducted a 45-hour value-added course titled ‘Designing Spaces: A Hands-On Approach with AutoCAD’ for the second-semester B.Tech Civil Engineering students. T
The course was inaugurated on 14 January 2025 by Dr. Abhilasha P. S (HoD, CE Dept) The session began with an introduction by Ms. Nirmala Krishnan (Course Coordinator, Asst. Prof, CE Dept), followed by a felicitation by Dr. Reji C. Joy (Institution Co-ordinator, CCE, HoD, MCA), who emphasized the significance of CAD in modern civil engineering practices.
Course Highlights
Day 1 | Introduction to CAD environment – workspace setup, units, essential drawing tools, object snap, grid snap, polar tracking, dynamic input, and orthogonal mode |
Day 2 | Advanced drawing tools (arc, polyline, ellipse, rectangle), hatch patterns, modify commands (trim, extend, move, copy, rotate, scale, mirror), block creation, and layer management |
Day 3 | Text and dimensioning – single-line & multiline text, linear, angular, radial, aligned dimensions, dimension styles, leaders, and tolerances |
Day 4 | Practical drafting – site plans, building floor plans, elevations, and civil utility layouts |
Day 5 | Layout management – model space vs. paper space, viewports, scale setting, plotting, and an objective exam |
Day 6 | Project work – drafting a 2D residential floor plan with annotations and title block; individual review and feedback |
Outcome
The course concluded with students demonstrating:
-
Improved drafting proficiency
-
Enhanced technical accuracy
-
Deeper understanding of CAD applications in civil engineering
This skill-development initiative successfully complemented the academic curriculum, bridging classroom learning with practical industry-oriented expertise.
The Editorial Team of News & Events joins the entire Vidya fraternity in extending heartiest appreciation to CE Dept and all involved on the seamless coordination of the session that provides practical training in drafting techniques and strengthened students’ technical accuracy and design proficiency !!! |
