CSE Dept organizes Hands-on Hardware Workshop for Higher Secondary Students
A Computer Hardware Workshop was organized for Higher Secondary students with the objective of familiarizing them with the fundamental components of computer hardware and offering hands-on experience in assembling a computer system. The workshop aimed to strengthen students’ practical understanding of computer functionality while cultivating essential technical skills relevant to modern ICT education
The session began with an introductory talk emphasizing the importance of hardware knowledge in today’s technology-driven world. Students were introduced to key internal components such as the motherboard, processor (CPU), RAM, storage devices, power supply unit, expansion cards, cooling systems, and various cables and connectors. External peripherals, including input and output devices, were also explained through live demonstrations.
Following the theory session, students were grouped for a practical hands-on activity. Under instructor guidance, they identified components, learned their functions, and assembled a computer step by step. This included installing the motherboard, connecting the processor and RAM, mounting storage devices, linking power connections, and completing necessary wiring. Students also gained exposure to BIOS settings, safety practices, troubleshooting common issues, and proper handling of sensitive electronic components.
The ITIMS team ensured all equipment operated smoothly and provided on-the-spot technical support throughout the workshop.
After the workshop, participants were taken on a short campus tour, during which major campus landmarks were introduced to give them a broader understanding of the institution and its facilities.
The hands-on activity generated significant enthusiasm among the participants. Many students shared that assembling a functional computer system boosted their confidence and enhanced their understanding far beyond traditional textbook learning. The collaborative, team-based learning environment was especially well received.
Session handling and technical guidance were led by Ms. Mithu Varghese (Asst Prof, CSE Dept) and Ms. Soumya Sijo (Asst Prof, CSE Dept), whose expertise greatly enhanced the quality of the hands-on sessions. In addition, technical support was efficiently provided by Mr. Arjun K (IT Support Associate) and Mr. Maneesh P P, (Hardware and Network Technician) ensuring a seamless practical experience for all participants. The workshop was effectively organized and executed with the dedicated involvement of faculty members and technical staff from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The event was coordinated under the leadership of Ms. Jucy Vareed (Dept Co-ordinator,Asst Prof,Sr Grade,CSE Dept). She was supported by Ms. Rebitha K R (Dept Co Co-ordinator, Asst Prof, CSE Dept) and Ms. Nikitha C Balan (Dept Co Co-ordinator, Asst Prof, CSE Dept), contributed significantly to the administrative arrangements. The overall event coordination was managed by Ms. Umasree A K (Asst Prof, CSE Dept) who oversaw the scheduling, resource allocation, and operational workflow throughout the workshop.
Faculty members from St. Thomas HSS Vallachira also appreciated the initiative and commended its effectiveness. Instructors observed active participation, curiosity, and strong teamwork throughout the workshop, reflecting the students’ genuine interest in the subject.
In conclusion, the hardware workshop was highly successful in achieving its objectives. It enhanced students’ technical awareness, fostered experiential learning, and inspired them to further explore the fields of computer science and hardware engineering.
