VSEC and ISTE conduct hands-on training session – “Shapes that Stay Strong: The Mathematics Behind Girders”

To provide students with a hands-on learning experience that demonstrates the mathematics behind structural strength in girders, a hands-on training session for students of Nanma Learning Centre, Engandiyur and Thirumangalam UP School, Engandiyur, titled “Shapes that Stay Strong: The Mathematics Behind Girders”, was conducted on 16 November 2025 at 10:30 AM at the respective institutions.

The programme was jointly organised by VSEC (Vidya Social Empowerment Center) VSEC and Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) VAST Chapter , with the resource persons, Dr. Siju K. C (Head, VSEC and Asso. Prof, AS Dept) and Mr. Kiran Babu A. R (Asst. Prof, CE Dept).

The session commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Siju.Following this, Mr. Kiran Babu provided a hands-on experience by dividing the students into four groups and guiding them in constructing girder models using ice-cream popsicle sticks and gum, with a sample model projected on the screen for reference.

After the construction activity, Dr. Siju demonstrated various 2D and 3D shapes, helping students identify related mathematical objects and thereby strengthening their conceptual understanding.

The completed girder models were load-tested, and the winning group was selected based on model performance.

The programme concluded with prize distribution by Mr. Jayaraj, followed by group photographs. Lunch was arranged and served by the Nanma Organising Committee. The students provided positive feedback and expressed enthusiasm and enjoyment about the session.

The Editorial Team of  News & Events joins the entire Vidya fraternity in extending heartiest congratulations to Dr. Siju and Mr Kiran on this  immersive learning session that facilitates the understanding of how mathematical ideas underpin engineering structures through practical model-making and evaluation !!!
