CE Dept attends session on ‘Maintenance and Safety Inspection of Concrete Buildings’
The Thrissur District Civil Engineers Green Construction Cooperative Society (R1568) conducted an informative seminar on “Maintenance and Safety Inspection of Concrete Buildings” at Pearl Regency, Thrissur.
The session commenced with an expert talk by Er. Sasikumar Therayil, M.Tech, who highlighted the importance of proactive maintenance and systematic inspection in ensuring the durability of concrete buildings. He explained common deterioration mechanisms, structural distress indicators, inspection methodologies, and the role of periodic assessments in preventing major structural failures.
A significant feature of the seminar was the live demonstration of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) equipment by Nandagopan M. (Structural Engineer, Matter Lab). Participants were introduced to rebound hammer and ultrasonic pulse velocity testing, core sampling, and other essential tools used for evaluating the in-situ condition of concrete structures. The hands-on demonstration enhanced the participants’ practical understanding of field testing procedures and data interpretation.
The session also included an insightful presentation by Vijesh Lal (Senior Manager – Technical, Cera-Chem) who provided a detailed overview of advanced concrete repair chemicals and modern rehabilitation solutions. He discussed epoxy systems, polymer-modified mortars, waterproofing treatments, corrosion protection methods, and sustainable repair approaches used in contemporary construction practices.

The seminar proved to be highly beneficial for all attendees, offering a blend of theoretical knowledge, field-level demonstrations, and exposure to industry-grade repair technologies. It enabled participants to better understand structural safety, quality assessment, and long-term maintenance planning.
