Concrete Mix Design Workshop by CE Dept – Bridging Theory and Practice for Hands-On Expertise

With the aim of understanding modern concrete technologies and enhancing practical skills for real-world engineering applications, the Department of Civil Engineering has been organizing various activities. As part of this initiative, a one-day Concrete Mix Design Workshop titled “Bridging Theory and Practice for Hands-On Expertise” was conducted at Vidya  on 07 January 2026. A total of 156 students from eight polytechnic colleges participated in the event:

• Sree Rama Government Polytechnic College, Thriprayar

• Government Polytechnic College, Chelakkara

• St. Mary’s Polytechnic College, Palakkad

• Nirmala Polytechnic College, Chalakkudy

• Women’s Polytechnic College, Nedupuzha

• Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Alagappanagar

• Government Polytechnic College, Palakkad

• Maharaja’s Technological Institute, Thrissur

Inaugural Session

The inaugural function commenced  with a prayer recited by Ms Yamini Vijayan (S6,CE Dept) . This was followed by a welcome address by Dr. Anjali P. Sasidharan (Asso Prof, CE Dept). Dr. Abhilasha P. S (HoD, CE Dept) delivered the presidential address. The inaugural address was given by Dr. Sunitha C. (Principal) who shared an inspiring message with the students. Ms. Ponsy Paul (Asst Prof – Sr  Grade, CE Dept) provided an overview of the program, and Ms. Chithira Ajeeth (Asst Prof, CE Dept) proposed the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, faculty members and participants.

Workshop Sessions

The technical sessions were conducted by the following resource persons:

• Ms. Nirmala Krishnan (Asst Prof – Sr  Grade, CE Dept)

• Ms. Nisha Varghese (Asst Prof – Sr  Grade, CE Dept)

• Ms. Ardra P. Nair (Asst Prof, CE Dept)

• Mr. Kiran Babu A. R. (Asst Prof, CE Dept)

After the inaugural session, students were divided into four groups, and sessions were conducted in different classrooms.The forenoon session focused on the theoretical aspects of concrete mix design and its practical relevance. The afternoon session was dedicated to hands-on training in concrete mix design, effectively managed by Ms. Premalatha A. S (Trade Instructor, CE Dept) and Mr. Sudhakaran T. T (Trade Instructor, CE Dept)

Students were also introduced to the department facilities, laboratories, and campus infrastructure, including the auditorium, canteen, hostel, Nakshathravanam, sports ground, and other amenities. This session was coordinated by Ms. Ponsy Paul (Asst Prof – Sr  Grade, CE Dept) , Ms. Chithra M (Asst Prof, CE Dept) and Ms. Roshni Vijay (Asst Prof, CE Dept)

A feedback session at the end of the workshop indicated that students were highly satisfied and found the workshop to be very informative, interactive, and beneficial. Participation certificates were distributed to all attendees by Dr. Abhilasha P. S.(HoD, CE Dept)
