VSEC Head leads engaging session on “Exploring Mensuration – Part A”
Under the aegis of the Vidya International Charitable Trust, VSEC (Vidya Social Empowerment Center) equips students with knowledge and skills to enhance their personal and professional growth.
Dr. Siju K. C (Head, VSEC and Asso. Prof, AS Dept) conducted an engaging session titled “Exploring Mensuration – Area, Surface Area, and Volume” for the scholarship students of the Kovilagath Foundation on 25 October 2025.
The session introduced the fundamental concepts of mensuration, emphasizing how geometry helps measure length (1D), area (2D), and volume (3D). Dr. Siju highlighted the practical significance of these measurements in daily life and professions such as architecture, engineering, and design, using relatable examples like calculating wall paint areas, tank capacities, and gift wrapping dimensions.
Students were guided through formulas for 2D shapes such as squares, rectangles, circles, and triangles, followed by an introduction to 3D solids including cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders, and cones. The distinction between surface area and volume was clarified using simple analogies and visual aids.
An interactive activity on drawing a cube allowed students to calculate its Curved Surface Area (CSA), Total Surface Area (TSA), and Volume, reinforcing the connection between 2D and 3D geometry concepts.
The session was highly participatory, enabling students to relate mathematical concepts to real-world applications. This marked Part A of a three-part series on mensuration, laying a solid foundation for upcoming sessions on deriving formulas for curved solids.
| The Editorial Team of News & Events joins the entire Vidya fraternity in extending heartiest congratulations to Dr. Siju on the engaging virtual session that connects mathematical concepts to real-world applications in fields like architecture, engineering, and design !!! |
