NSS conducts Beach Cleaning Drive at Chavakkad Beach

In continuation of its environmental conservation efforts, NSS Unit 101 of Vidya Academy of Science and Technology carried out a beach cleaning activity at Chavakkad Beach. The programme was organized on 07 March 2026 as part of the unit’s sustained commitment towards reducing plastic pollution and promoting eco-friendly practices in coastal regions. The activity was conducted under the guidance of Mr. Shameer (Health Inspector, Chavakkad) whose expertise and support contributed to the smooth execution of the programme.

A total of 30 NSS volunteers actively participated in the drive. Prior to the cleaning activity, volunteers were briefed on safe waste handling practices and the importance of segregation at source. The team then undertook a systematic cleaning operation across different zones of the beach, ensuring maximum coverage within the available time.

During the drive, approximately 25 kilograms of plastic and other non-biodegradable waste materials were collected. The waste was carefully segregated and subsequently handed over to the Chavakkad Municipality for scientific disposal and further processing. The initiative not only helped restore the cleanliness of the beach but also reinforced the importance of proper waste management practices among participants and the general public.

An additional highlight of the programme was the informal awareness interaction conducted by volunteers with beach visitors, encouraging them to minimize plastic usage and adopt responsible disposal habits. This added an educational dimension to the activity, extending its impact beyond waste collection.

The programme also provided an opportunity for volunteers to develop teamwork, leadership, and social responsibility. The coordinated efforts of student leaders ensured effective planning and execution of the drive.

The smooth and efficient execution of the event was made possible through the leadership of NSS Volunteer Secretaries Harikrishnan K (S6, ME Dept) and Alanteena (S6,EEE Dept), along with NRPF coordinators Vishnudev M. S (S6, ME Dept) and Nandhana K. S (S6,EEE Dept) whose teamwork and dedication ensured the success of the programme.

The entire activity was carried out under the supervision of Mr. Ranjith E. R (NSS Program Officer, Asst Prof, ME Dept) whose constant guidance and motivation played a vital role in achieving the objectives of the programme.

Overall, the beach cleaning activity conducted on 07 March 2026 was successful in promoting environmental awareness, encouraging community participation, and strengthening the NSS Unit’s ongoing mission of sustainable development and social commitment.
