ME Dept organises Two-day Workshop on Blended Learning

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the College organized a two-day workshop on Blended Learning during 28-29.11.2017.  Here is an overview of the various activities conducted as part of the workshop. All the activities were held in the Computer Centre of the College.

Day – 1 (28.11.2017)

Inauguration

The programme was started with an inaugural ceremony attended by the Executive Director, the Principal, the Vice Principal, faculty members and staff of the College. The ceremony was graced by two very important persons, Dr. Chandrakantha, Principal, Government Womens’ Polytechnic, Nedupuzha, and Dr. Vimal Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, St. Thomas College, Thrissur, both of whom are closely associated with activities related to the rejuvenation of the higher education sector in Kerala.

Dr. Chandrakantha formally inaugurated the function by lighting the traditional lamp and talked in detail about the importance of blended learning and also about the latest developments in learning methodologies. Dr. Vimal Kumar, in his keynote address, focused on the future plans of Kerala Government in implementing various projects in educational institutions using the latest technology.

Session – 1

The resource person for the session was Mr. Arun Xavier (Asst. Prof, EEE Dept.) and the the topic was Designing a Personal Website. As part of the session, the participants had to create a course website on their domain using WordPress.

Session – 2

The session was handled by Mr. Shali K R, Server Administrator. Mr Shali gave a detailed account of the methods for  creating a course on Moodle.

Session – 3

In the session, all the previously constituted teams had to create a course in Moodle on a topic of their choice. All the teams completed the assigned task on time.

Day – 2 (29.11.2017)

Session – 4

The resource person for the fourth session was Mr. Alex Chacko C (Asst. Prof., ME Dept). The topic for the session was flipped classroom. He demonstrated how to design a flipped classroom using new technologies. A special feature of the session was a demonstration of creating a screen-cast video and publishing it in the internet for the purpose of sharing with students.

Session – 5

The fifth session started by 11.30 am. The resource person was Mr. Arun Xavier and the topic was creating documents and presentations using LaTeX and beamer. He demonstrated these processes in a step by step manner.

Session – 6

The sixth session started at 2 pm. the session witnessed practicing of creation of beamer presentation by the teams. The resource people supervised the entire process.

It was followed by presentation of the created beamer presentations by the teams. It was evaluated by the resource people and Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering. The organizers strongly felt that the outcome of the workshop perfectly matched with the learning objectives of the workshop.

Valedictory function

Valedictory function involved a special address by Dr. K B M Namboothiripad, Visiting Professor, ME Department, in which he highlighted the importance of adopting latest technology in classrooms for reinforcing the teaching learning process. It was followed by distribution of certificates to participants. The session concluded at 4.30 pm after a group photo session and tea.
