EEE Dept organises two-day workshop on industrial automation using PLC

The EEE Dept of Vidya hosted a two-day workshop on Industrial Automation Using PLC for faculty members, PG students and research scholars from various engineering colleges and for personnel from industry during 6 – 7  January 2020. The main objective of this workshop was to make the aspiring engineers acquainted with the conceptual as well as practical knowledge of industrial automation and about the technologies currently being used in the implementation of industrial automation. The topics for discussion in the workshop were selected based on the contents of a course titled “Industrial Instrumentation and Automation & Systems and Control Lab”  now being taught as part pf the B Tech programme in EEE. The workshop was coordinated by Ms Neenu Thomas and Ms Anooja V S, Assistant Professors in EEE Dept.

PLC

A programmable logic controller (PLC) or programmable controller is an industrial digital computer which has been ruggedized and adapted for the control of manufacturing processes, such as assembly lines, or robotic devices, or any activity that requires high reliability control and ease of programming and process fault diagnosis.

The inaugural function of the workshop was held on 6 January at 9.30 a.m. in EEE Seminar Hall. Dr Remani T, Professor and Head, EEE Dept, delivered the welcome address. Dr Saji C B, Principal, presided over the function. Dr Jisha V R, Associate Professor, Government Engineering College, Thrissur formally inaugurated the workshop by lighting the lamp. Er G Mohanachandran, Executive Director, VICT and Dr Sudha Balagopalan, Dean Academics, graced the occasion with their presence and felicitated the programme. Ms Neenu Thomas proposed the vote of thanks.

The workshop started with an introduction on Industrial Automation followed by a detailed session on PLC programming by Dr Jisha V R, GEC, Thrissur. this was followed by  PLC hands-on training by Mr Joseph Roger V Y, Professor, Eurotech Academy. He introduced the concepts of ladder logic with logic gates, timers and counters. On the second day, the hands-on training was continued with PLC applications like bottle filling, traffic signal control etc. As many as 35 persons from eight different institutions attended the workshop. The workshop was concluded with a valedictory function.
