FOSSERS Club organizes two day Wikimedia Workshop

The FoSSers Club of VAST  conducts workshops and activities with an objective  to introduce participants to various Wikimedia projects and tools, focusing on practical skills.

A two-day hands-on Wikimedia Workshop was successfully conducted as a part of “Wiki Loves Onam” under the auspices of FoSSers Club of VAST  during 12-13 October 2024.

The workshop began with a welcome address by Dr Sajay K R (Asso Prof, MCA) who greeted all participants and expressed his gratitude to the resource persons from Sahya Digital Conservation Foundation and the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group.Special mention was made of the experts, including Er Jinoy Tom Jacob, Er Manoj Karingamadathil, Er Renjith, and Er.Subin Sibi who guided the participants throughout the workshop.

Resource Persons
Experienced members from Sahya Digital Foundation and the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group led the sessions, providing in-depth training on Wikimedia projects and tools.

Participants
The workshop was attended by around 20 students from the MCA ,AIMLand one student from ME department of Vidya Academy, all of whom actively engaged in the practical sessions.

Topics Covered
The workshop covered the following topics through hands-on sessions:

1. Wikimedia Commons
   • Uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons.
   • Categorizing images for better organization.
   • Proper naming conventions for photos to enhance searchability.
2. HotCat Gadget
   • Introduction to the HotCat tool, which streamlines the process of adding categories to files on Wikimedia Commons.
3. OpenRefine
   • Training on OpenRefine, a tool for cleaning and organizing data before uploading to Wikimedia projects.

Certificates were distributed to all participants in recognition of their active participation.
