NSS inspires environmental stewardship through World Environment Day Activities

The NSS Units of Vidya aimed to cultivate environmental protection awareness, promote sustainable lifestyles, and encourage active participation in conservation efforts among students and the wider community through various activities.

In observance of World Environment Day on 05 June 2026, the NSS Units of Vidya  successfully organized a comprehensive series of environmental awareness and conservation activities under the Natural Resource Protection Force (NRPF) Flagship Programme.The initiative aimed to cultivate environmental protection awareness, champion sustainable lifestyles, and stimulate active participation in conservation efforts among both students and the broader community.

The day’s proceedings featured a balanced blend of campus-based initiatives and targeted community outreach. Operational leadership was seamlessly executed by the NSS Volunteer Secretaries and NRPF Unit Coordinators under the expert supervision of Mr. Rajesh S K (NSS Program Officer, Asso Prof, EEE  Dept), Mr. Ranjith E. R (NSS Program Officer, Asst Prof, ME Dept) and Ms. Delmy David V (NSS Program Officer, Asst Prof, CSE Dept). Ultimately, the collective drive of the volunteers and community participants reinforced the core message that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility critical to building a greener, more sustainable future.

Campus Activities

The campus-level activities commenced with a serene and purposeful rendition of “Manavageetham,” setting an inspiring tone for the event. This was followed by motivational inaugural addresses from NSS Programme Officers Mr. Ranjith E. R. and Ms. Delmy David V., who both challenged the youth to become active agents of ecological preservation. Following the musical opening, NSS Programme Officer Mr. Ranjith E. R. formally inaugurated the event and addressed the volunteers, strongly emphasizing the vital role that youth involvement plays in preserving nature and advocating for sustainable practices. Adding to the momentum, fellow NSS Programme Officer Ms. Delmy David V. delivered a motivational address that urged the volunteers to become proactive participants in environmental protection efforts.

Tree Plantation

The campus tree plantation activity began with NSS Programme Officers and volunteers working together to plant saplings at selected locations across the college grounds. Designed to highlight the critical importance of conserving the environment and expanding local green cover, the drive saw enthusiastic, hands-on participation from the volunteers. To ensure the long-term success of the initiative, the students also pledged to actively care for and nurture the young trees throughout their growth.

Environment Day Pledge

An Environment Day Pledge was administered to all participating NSS volunteers, serving as a powerful reminder of each individual’s collective responsibility to safeguard the planet for future generations. Through this oath, the volunteers formally reaffirmed their personal commitment to protecting nature, conserving vital natural resources, and actively reducing pollution. By pledging to adopt and promote environmentally responsible habits in their daily lives, the students solidified their roles as dedicated stewards of long-term ecological sustainability.

Paper Pen Making Activity

To promote sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic products, an environment-friendly paper pen making workshop was conducted for the NSS volunteers. The students actively participated in crafting functional pens using recycled paper materials, gaining hands-on experience in sustainable manufacturing. Beyond teaching a practical craft, the creative session successfully raised widespread awareness among the volunteers regarding waste reduction, the benefits of recycling, and the ease of adopting eco-friendly products into their everyday lives.

Community Outreach Activities at St. Thomas U.P. School, Puliyanoor

As part of the community outreach initiative, the NSS volunteers organized a dedicated environmental campaign at St. Thomas U.P. School, Puliyanoor, to instill ecological awareness and inspire active conservation habits among the young students. This segment was formally inaugurated by Mr. Nidhish Chandran (Vice President, Velur Grama Panchayat), who spoke on the critical nature of environmental conservation, while Mr. Ranjeev A. G. (Ward Member) delivered an encouraging message focused on local cleanliness and resource protection.A dynamic, interactive awareness session was then led by NSS volunteers Ajay M. S. and Nandhana K. S., who educated the school students on biodiversity, sustainable living, and systematic waste management. Concluding the outreach event, NSS volunteers and school students joined forces for a collaborative tree plantation drive on the school premises, which was paired with a sapling distribution drive allowing students to take plants home, effectively extending the environmental movement into local households.

Environmental Awareness Session

Following the inaugural addresses, an educational awareness session on environmental protection and sustainable living was conducted for the school students. NSS volunteers Ajay M. S. and Nandhana K. S. stepped up as the resource persons for this segment, guiding the audience through the core significance of World Environment Day. They delivered detailed explanations on the urgency of environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, and practical daily waste management practices, while emphasizing the critical role that young students play in safeguarding nature. The session proved to be highly interactive and was enthusiastically received by the students, who walked away with a clearer understanding of how to implement green habits in their own lives.

Tree Sapling Distribution
As part of the programme, tree saplings were distributed to the students of the school. The students were encouraged to plant and nurture them in their homes and surroundings. This initiative aimed to extend the impact of the programme beyond the school campus and foster a sense of environmental responsibility among the younger generation.

The smooth and successful execution of the entire programme was made possible through the dedicated efforts and effective leadership of the NSS Volunteer Secretaries and NRPF Unit Coordinators, whose active involvement in planning, coordination, and implementation ensured the seamless conduct of all activities. The initiative was carried out under the close guidance and supervision of Mr. Rajesh S K (NSS Program Officer, Asso Prof, EEE  Dept), Mr. Ranjith E. R (NSS Program Officer, Asst Prof, ME Dept) and Ms. Delmy David V (NSS Program Officer, Asst Prof, CSE Dept) whose continuous support, encouragement, and monitoring played a vital role in the systematic execution of the day. Ultimately, the World Environment Day celebrations concluded as a major success, fueled by the enthusiastic participation of both the NSS volunteers and the school students.
